Linux vs Free/Open BSD
Ok, why should I use one over the other.
Let me explain my situation:
I have a fully functional AMD PC with 200 gigs of HD memory, a gig of RAM, A DVD-ROM and a DVD burner.
The only reason it's a server is because something had to be and I trust this machine more than some used box off of eBay or a $299 Dell.
And I plan to allow limited connectivity to this for friends and family online.
So why should I use Linux over FreeBSD or vice versa.

Choose the OS that your technically-oriented friends already know.
In my case, I know several people who are proficient with linux, and zero who know BSD.
I get the impression that Linux has a much larger community than BSD.
Linux, because you are more likely to find help on it, and It will be easier, and more graphical to use.

but seriously, folks, if you are going to use this as network file server go with FreeBSD, forget the "graphic" interface. focus the cpu, all the memory and the network throughput on the NOS.

simple is better, the less that can go wrong.
I would go with one of the Linux distros.
I admin several FreeBSD boxes that are located at colos. One is a fairly busy web
site (3 million+ page veiws a month). While I find the ports system to be quite cool
for installing software packages and also updating them I find it takes more knowledge
and skill to admin the FreeBSD boxes.
I have also been admining and using various versions of RedHat and Fedora Core
over the years and it is hard to beat the ease of updating the boxes using
yum or apt-get. When I want to get a Fedora Core box updated I just
type 'yum update' - and it all happens so smoothly.
Linux is just easier. If you're really paranoid, BSD has more options for security, but Linux is plenty secure (as secure as you configure it to be, of course).
linux is bullshit.
I really like openbsd for anything that doesn't need java, threads, or SMP. That last problem is getting taken care of.
Otherwise, FreeBSD is pretty coo'. Linux is fine. Most of it's all the same shit. OpenBSD definately has the most idiosyncrasies as far as what does and doesn't work, but most of the time it's for a good reason.

If you want to learn, use the system you don't know. If you want it to work quickly, use something you do know. If you do not know any operating system, you don't need a server, as it will complicate your life.
Avoid:
Windows, idiots, drunk drivers, script kiddies and any arbitrary self--proclaimed Linux Gurus (this used to be windows, but these days...)
Sell, give away, or throw away all of your technological devices including all computers and electronics items. Sterilize yourself so that you are unable to be a further detriment to the global gene pool by your procreation and finally STFU!
You obviously are unable to RTFM. We were all n00bs at one time. This is normal, but you will learn very quickly that asking for information that you can easily explore, and lookup yourself will piss alot of people off.
